POPE’S SUMMER RESIDENCE AND CATACOMBS
The countryside around the area of Rome is simply fabulous!
So many farmhouses, villas and palaces…
One nice stop will be Castel Gandolfo, located 15 miles southeast of Rome, occupying a height on the Alban Hillsoverlooking Lake Albano. It has a population of approximately 8,800 residents and is considered one of Italy’s most scenic towns.
Within the town’s borders lies the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo which serves as a summer residence and vacation retreat for the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church.
Although the palace is located within the borders of Castel Gandolfo, it has extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See and is not under Italian jurisdiction.
Later on, you will be heading towards Rome after lunch, stopping by the mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a famous roman noblewoman, and the Catacombs, the underground tunnels where the Christians who were persecuted by the Romans had to practice their religion in secret.
Once you get to Rome you will be able to visit Venice Square and the Coliseum.
A different itinerary for those that have already bee to Rome and wish to see more sights!
