VILLA ADRIANA & VILLA D’ESTE
If you want to see some of the Roman history and architecture from another point of view, this is the tour you should book!!
Today we will take you to 2 enchanting mansions: Villa Adriana and Villa D’Este.
Well Known as “Tibur”, in latin, Tivoli is about 25 miles from Rome, on the left bank of the Aniene river, on the lower slopes of the Sabine Hills. It was founded about two hundred years before Rome, where people coming from different areas of Lazio region, the Latins and the Sabins, met for trading purpouses. The city afterwards fell under the domination of Rome and of most of the rich and political representatives of Rome used to own a Villa over there.
You will approach the city after one and half hour journey, where you will then spend time visiting the ruins of the famous countryside villa that belonged to the Emperor Hadrian: the vastness of the estate is absolutely incredible! This site was declared World Heritage site in 1999 for the important role that its monuments played in the discovery of the elements of Classic Architecture.
The next stop will be Villa d’Este, built back in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, son of Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso I. The villa is very famous for its gardens, which extend from the rear entrance of the villa: the Architect Pirro Ligorio did an excellent job connecting the various slopes of the garden, and the water that was necessary for the fountains was brought into the area using natural water pressure. A walking guide can be hired to visit both villas upon request.
Afterwards you will be driven back to the port of Civitavecchia.
