This is a special tour dedicated to those who want to experience a true taste of “Etruscan Italy“.
It will take approximately an hour from the port of Civitavecchia to get to Orvieto, in the region of Umbria, which lies on a plateau of soft volcanic rock.
You will have free time to explore this small town center on your own. Our driver will show you how to get into the Duomo, one of the most beautiful in the country or take a tour of the underground city with all the winding tunnels.
Dug deep into the tuff (Tufo in italian), a volcanic rock, these secret hidden tunnels are only now open to view through guided tours. Our driver will show you where to get the tickets. Their spectacular nature has also yielded many historical and archeological finds.
Next stop in Orvieto will be “St Patrick’s well“, built on the order of Pope Clemente the 7th. It was named after Saint Patrick for being similar to the underground cave where the famous Irish Saint used to retire and pray and where the unbelieving who ventured to the bottom of the cave would gain remission of sins and access to heaven.
Later on you will depart for Civita di Bagnoregio, a 30 inhabitant small town only accessible through a narrow foot bridge. The town is noted for its striking position at the top of a plateau of friable volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley, in constant danger of destruction as its edges fall off, leaving the buildings built on the plateau to crumble.
As well as this, on the way back you’ll be able to stop and enjoy the spectacular view of Lake Bolsena from Montefiascone.
A unique day to discover the surroundings of Rome.
